The History Of Hummus – So, Who Do We Have To Thank For Its Creation?
We cannot imagine traditional Lebanese cuisine without the one and only – Hummus – Levantine dip that is made from cooked and mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and salt.
The name comes from the Arabic word and it means “chickpeas”, but the full name of it in Arabic language is “ḥummuṣ bi ṭaḥīna” which means chickpeas with tahini. It has a variety of spellings like hummus, hommos, humus and many others and they are all correct.
Many regions around the world claim to be the place where hummus originated and many of them with their very own variation. There are hundreds of different theories as to the origins of hummus and we can’t tell for sure where this great food source was first invented, but we do know that chickpeas, the main ingredient of hummus, were known to be cultivated in the ancient Mediterranean and the Middle East regions. They were consumed in ancient Palestines, and was one of the earliest crops in Mesopotamia, as well as a common food on the streets of ancient Rome. It is also known that the ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Socrates made reference to the nutritional value of hummus in their writings.
So, why is hummus so good, we think we may have the answer.
Hummus is beneficial for everyone. It’s a useful food in vegan, vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets. It is gluten-free, nut-free and dairy-free spread and it pairs perfectly with snacks such as apples, carrots, celery, pita bread, pita chips and many others. When eaten with bread it serves as a complete protein, similar to other combinations of grains and legumes. It’s also the perfect accompaniment to our falafel, grilled chicken, and eggplant but of course it tastes excellent by itself too.
You can never go wrong with hummus. It is a perfect starter for every meal in our menu and you won’t be disappointed by its taste.
